Top 10 Gyarados Pokémon Cards to Collect

Collector guide · Reviewed 21 October 2026 · By TCGInvest editorial

Gyarados offers a clear contrast between its familiar blue appearance and red shiny treatments. Add Trainer-linked cards, Team Rocket designs and the e-Reader era, and there are several coherent ways to collect it. This list balances those paths instead of treating every large full art as a substitute for the earlier holos.

How we chose these cards

This is an editorial shortlist ranked for artwork, variety across card designs and usefulness in a themed collection. It is not a price, rarity, popularity-vote or expected-return ranking. We focus on established English printings from several eras, rather than promising a complete catalogue or every recent release. Edition and foil variants are not separate places unless explicitly identified. The pictured finish is a reference: confirm the finish offered by the seller.

Start with a comparison: Open Card Finder to look for the printing and inspect any available dated references. Coverage varies, so a missing card or price is not a zero valuation. See how our sources work.

The shortlist at a glance

1. Shining Gyarados — Neo Revelation

Exact printing: Shining Gyarados · Neo Revelation · 65/64 · English.

Shining Gyarados brings a dramatic red-coloured Pokémon into a Neo-era scene. It is a strong centrepiece for a collection following shiny designs. Check the edition and number 65, and compare original photographs rather than relying on a seller's broad description of a red Gyarados.

Search eBay UK for Shining Gyarados 65/64 · Compare the pictured edition, finish, condition and delivered price before choosing a listing.

2. Gyarados — Base

Exact printing: Gyarados · Base · 6/102 · English.

Base Set Gyarados is the historical anchor, with a compact holo image that contrasts with later full-card designs. It fits naturally beside a vintage Magikarp. Edition and shadow treatment matter, while the foil needs angled photographs to assess scratches accurately.

3. Gyarados ★ δ — Holon Phantoms

Exact printing: Gyarados ★ δ · Holon Phantoms · 102/110 · English.

The star-marked Delta Species Gyarados from Holon Phantoms combines two distinctive collecting themes. It offers a different shiny-era direction from Shining Gyarados. Keep the exact set and number in the search and inspect both surfaces closely on higher-value copies.

4. Dark Gyarados — Team Rocket

Exact printing: Dark Gyarados · Team Rocket · 8/82 · English.

Dark Gyarados adds a Team Rocket chapter to the species collection. Its holo version is separately numbered from the non-holo card in the same expansion. Ask the seller to show any prerelease stamp clearly, because that detail changes which variant you are comparing.

5. Gyarados-EX — BREAKpoint

Exact printing: Gyarados-EX · BREAKpoint · 123/122 · English.

BREAKpoint's secret-numbered Gyarados-EX gives the list a busy, energetic composition. It is a good choice for collectors who enjoy full-card scenes from the EX era. Number 123 is essential because the expansion contains several Gyarados and Mega Gyarados treatments.

6. Gyarados ex — Scarlet & Violet

Exact printing: Gyarados ex · Scarlet & Violet · 225/198 · English.

The Scarlet & Violet full-art Gyarados ex gives the species a Terastal-era identity. It provides a modern visual counterpart to the older shiny cards. Match number 225 rather than the standard Gyarados ex, and inspect photographs that show the surface texture.

7. Gyarados — Skyridge

Exact printing: Gyarados · Skyridge · 11/144 · English.

Skyridge brings Gyarados into the broad e-Reader frame. It is a distinctive choice for an era-focused binder. This pick is number 11, not the separately numbered H10 holo. Confirm the offered finish, since a collector number alone does not distinguish every variant.

8. Gyarados ex — FireRed & LeafGreen

Exact printing: Gyarados ex · FireRed & LeafGreen · 109/112 · English.

FireRed & LeafGreen Gyarados ex introduces the lowercase ex era's silver border. It works as a link between early holos and the more elaborate EX cards. Confirm the exact set and number, and request clear border and corner photographs before judging condition.

9. Gyarados — HeartGold & SoulSilver

Exact printing: Gyarados · HeartGold & SoulSilver · 123/123 · English.

HeartGold & SoulSilver's secret-numbered Gyarados provides another red-coloured interpretation within a different frame. It suits collectors tracing how shiny portrayals changed across eras. Number 123 distinguishes it from the expansion's regular Gyarados, so retain that number when searching.

10. Misty's Gyarados — Gym Challenge

Exact printing: Misty's Gyarados · Gym Challenge · 13/132 · English.

Misty's Gyarados gives the species a direct connection to a named Water-type Trainer. It is a focused addition for a Gym-era or Misty-themed page. Confirm the English Gym Challenge printing and edition rather than comparing related Japanese artwork as though it were identical.

Build a Gyarados collection with a clear goal

A red-versus-blue page is a clear starting theme. For a character-focused collection, add Misty’s Gyarados or pair the species with Magikarp. Keep prerelease stamps and edition differences separate in your notes when comparing vintage cards.

Use the tools before you choose a listing

Identify and compare: Card Finder helps you look for exact cards and available observations. Check the date and source market before treating a reference as a UK transaction price.

Review a graded card: PSA Lookup is a useful next step when checking a PSA-labelled listing. Match the label, certificate and card photographs; a certificate number by itself does not establish the condition or authenticity of the item offered.

Consider grading carefully: Read our UK grading costs and turnaround guide before submitting a card. Check the current service terms, include postage and selling costs, and allow for uncertain grades. A raw-to-PSA-10 price difference is not expected profit.

Explore the set: Browse chase cards when you want context for other cards in an expansion. If you are comparing sealed products as well, use the Booster Box Tracker and ETB Tracker. A set reference is not the price of this single card. For a sealed purchase you already track, use the ROI Calculator to compare its recorded performance with your purchase cost; it is a sealed-product tool, not a card-grading forecast.

Keep track: Where a card is covered, open its detail page to use the available collection or watchlist controls. See price-alert options for supported products; coverage, account requirements and plan limits apply. An article link does not mean every card here has an alert.

How to compare eBay listings

Start with the exact name, set, number and English language shown above. Our links use the card name, set and collector number, with English selected through eBay’s language filter. Promotional cards use their specific promo number rather than a long set label. Search results can still include the wrong printing, bundles or altered cards. They are starting points, not a seller recommendation or an authentication service.

For vintage cards, compare the edition stamp and any relevant printing differences. For all cards, ask for clear front, back, corner and surface photographs. A scan of the ideal card does not establish the condition of the copy for sale. Holo, reverse-holo, stamped and non-holo variants may share a number.

Compare the total delivered cost, including postage and any import charges. Raw and graded copies belong in separate comparisons, as do different grading companies and grades. Asking prices are not completed-sale evidence. Read the seller’s description, feedback and return terms before committing.

Questions about collecting Gyarados cards

Which Gyarados card should I buy first?

Choose one artwork you would enjoy owning, then set a delivered-cost limit. The first-ranked card is an editorial display pick, not a requirement or a promise that it is affordable. A simpler set card can make a better first purchase if you prefer its artwork or condition.

Are these the most expensive Gyarados cards?

No. The order reflects this guide’s collecting criteria. It does not use a live price table, auction record, print-run estimate or measured popularity score. A card outside this list can be a better fit for your theme.

Should I buy a single card or open packs?

A correctly identified single lets you choose the specific card and condition offered. Opening packs has an uncertain outcome and does not guarantee any card on this list. Compare the experience you want with the money you are prepared to spend.

Do the eBay links show the exact card?

They search for the card name, set and number, with English selected through eBay’s language filter, but eBay can return imperfect matches. Verify the listing photographs, language, finish and condition yourself. We do not claim current stock, a particular seller or a fixed price.

Sources and artwork

Card names, set identities, numbers and reference artwork were checked against the Pokémon TCG data catalogue, an independent community-maintained dataset. Images are served from copies checked against TCGdex’s English card catalogue or Pokémon’s official card artwork. You can also consult the official Pokémon card database and its search guide. Older releases and variants may need separate references. Card artwork is © Pokémon / Nintendo / Creatures / GAME FREAK; displayed to identify and discuss the cards, without implying endorsement. Rankings and collecting commentary are TCGInvest editorial choices.
