Top 10 Gengar Pokémon Cards to Collect

Collector guide · Reviewed 21 October 2026 · By TCGInvest editorial

Gengar works unusually well as a species collection because its cards can be mischievous, eerie or deliberately surreal. The best choice depends on whether you prefer a compact vintage holo, a named Trainer connection or a dramatic modern scene. This list gives those approaches separate places rather than equating the largest illustration with the only worthwhile card.

How we chose these cards

This is an editorial shortlist ranked for artwork, variety across card designs and usefulness in a themed collection. It is not a price, rarity, popularity-vote or expected-return ranking. We focus on established English printings from several eras, rather than promising a complete catalogue or every recent release. Edition and foil variants are not separate places unless explicitly identified. The pictured finish is a reference: confirm the finish offered by the seller.

Start with a comparison: Open Card Finder to look for the printing and inspect any available dated references. Coverage varies, so a missing card or price is not a zero valuation. See how our sources work.

The shortlist at a glance

1. Gengar VMAX — Fusion Strike

Exact printing: Gengar VMAX · Fusion Strike · 271/264 · English.

Fusion Strike's illustration turns Gengar VMAX into a huge, surreal focal point. The exaggerated mouth and surrounding scene make it a natural centrepiece for a ghost-themed page. Number 271 separates this artwork from the regular Gengar VMAX in the same set.

2. Gengar — Fossil

Exact printing: Gengar · Fossil · 5/62 · English.

The Fossil holo is a clean starting point for an English Gengar collection. Its compact illustration and older layout contrast well with modern full arts. Match number 5 for the holo and check the edition stamp; Fossil also includes a separately numbered non-holo Gengar.

3. Gengar & Mimikyu-GX — Team Up

Exact printing: Gengar & Mimikyu-GX · Team Up · 165/181 · English.

Gengar & Mimikyu-GX gives two Ghost-type favourites a shared illustration. It is particularly appealing if you prefer character interaction over a solo portrait. Use number 165 when searching, because Team Up includes several versions with the same Pokémon names and mechanic.

4. Sabrina's Gengar — Gym Heroes

Exact printing: Sabrina's Gengar · Gym Heroes · 14/132 · English.

Sabrina's Gengar ties the Pokémon to a named Trainer and the Gym-era visual system. It offers a more specific collecting story than a generic species checklist. Compare English Gym Heroes copies with one another; Japanese cards with related artwork are separate printings.

5. Dark Gengar — Neo Destiny

Exact printing: Dark Gengar · Neo Destiny · 6/105 · English.

Dark Gengar extends the species into Neo Destiny's Dark Pokémon theme. It makes a useful companion to the Fossil holo without duplicating its design. Check the edition and dark foil areas carefully, since photographs can make surface wear difficult to see.

6. Gengar — Skyridge

Exact printing: Gengar · Skyridge · 10/144 · English.

Skyridge brings Gengar into the broad-bordered e-Reader era. It is a distinctive choice for collectors who like unusual frames as much as the Pokémon. This pick is number 10, not the separately numbered holo; confirm the standard or reverse-holo finish offered by the seller.

7. Gengar ex — FireRed & LeafGreen

Exact printing: Gengar ex · FireRed & LeafGreen · 108/112 · English.

FireRed & LeafGreen Gengar ex represents the silver-bordered lowercase ex era. It provides a mechanical and visual link between vintage holos and later EX cards. Ask for close-ups of the border and corners rather than judging condition from the central artwork alone.

8. M Gengar-EX — Phantom Forces

Exact printing: M Gengar-EX · Phantom Forces · 121/119 · English.

Phantom Forces' Mega Gengar-EX uses the loud typography and dynamic layout associated with Mega Evolution cards. Choose it when you want a dramatic design break within the page. Match number 121; other Gengar and Mega Gengar cards in the set have different numbers.

9. Gengar LV.X — Arceus

Exact printing: Gengar LV.X · Arceus · 97/99 · English.

Gengar LV.X introduces another design language, with the Pokémon extending beyond the usual artwork window. It suits a collection arranged by successive game mechanics. Confirm the Arceus set and number 97, and inspect the silver edges for wear before comparing graded and raw copies.

10. Gengar ex — Temporal Forces

Exact printing: Gengar ex · Temporal Forces · 193/162 · English.

Temporal Forces' full-art Gengar ex offers a modern portrait-style alternative to the large Fusion Strike scene. It is useful for collectors who prefer a simpler composition. Do not confuse the full art with the standard Gengar ex in the same expansion.

Build a Gengar collection with a clear goal

A three-card Gengar page can contrast Fossil, Sabrina’s Gengar and Fusion Strike. For a more connected artwork project, build a Gastly-to-Haunter-to-Gengar evolution row instead. Keep that goal separate from a checklist of every finish.

Use the tools before you choose a listing

Identify and compare: Card Finder helps you look for exact cards and available observations. Check the date and source market before treating a reference as a UK transaction price.

Review a graded card: PSA Lookup is a useful next step when checking a PSA-labelled listing. Match the label, certificate and card photographs; a certificate number by itself does not establish the condition or authenticity of the item offered.

Consider grading carefully: Read our UK grading costs and turnaround guide before submitting a card. Check the current service terms, include postage and selling costs, and allow for uncertain grades. A raw-to-PSA-10 price difference is not expected profit.

Explore the set: Browse chase cards when you want context for other cards in an expansion. If you are comparing sealed products as well, use the Booster Box Tracker and ETB Tracker. A set reference is not the price of this single card. For a sealed purchase you already track, use the ROI Calculator to compare its recorded performance with your purchase cost; it is a sealed-product tool, not a card-grading forecast.

Keep track: Where a card is covered, open its detail page to use the available collection or watchlist controls. See price-alert options for supported products; coverage, account requirements and plan limits apply. An article link does not mean every card here has an alert.

How to compare eBay listings

Start with the exact name, set, number and English language shown above. Our links use the card name, set and collector number, with English selected through eBay’s language filter. Promotional cards use their specific promo number rather than a long set label. Search results can still include the wrong printing, bundles or altered cards. They are starting points, not a seller recommendation or an authentication service.

For vintage cards, compare the edition stamp and any relevant printing differences. For all cards, ask for clear front, back, corner and surface photographs. A scan of the ideal card does not establish the condition of the copy for sale. Holo, reverse-holo, stamped and non-holo variants may share a number.

Compare the total delivered cost, including postage and any import charges. Raw and graded copies belong in separate comparisons, as do different grading companies and grades. Asking prices are not completed-sale evidence. Read the seller’s description, feedback and return terms before committing.

Questions about collecting Gengar cards

Which Gengar card should I buy first?

Choose one artwork you would enjoy owning, then set a delivered-cost limit. The first-ranked card is an editorial display pick, not a requirement or a promise that it is affordable. A simpler set card can make a better first purchase if you prefer its artwork or condition.

Are these the most expensive Gengar cards?

No. The order reflects this guide’s collecting criteria. It does not use a live price table, auction record, print-run estimate or measured popularity score. A card outside this list can be a better fit for your theme.

Should I buy a single card or open packs?

A correctly identified single lets you choose the specific card and condition offered. Opening packs has an uncertain outcome and does not guarantee any card on this list. Compare the experience you want with the money you are prepared to spend.

Do the eBay links show the exact card?

They search for the card name, set and number, with English selected through eBay’s language filter, but eBay can return imperfect matches. Verify the listing photographs, language, finish and condition yourself. We do not claim current stock, a particular seller or a fixed price.

Sources and artwork

Card names, set identities, numbers and reference artwork were checked against the Pokémon TCG data catalogue, an independent community-maintained dataset. Images are served from copies checked against TCGdex’s English card catalogue or Pokémon’s official card artwork. You can also consult the official Pokémon card database and its search guide. Older releases and variants may need separate references. Card artwork is © Pokémon / Nintendo / Creatures / GAME FREAK; displayed to identify and discuss the cards, without implying endorsement.
