Top 10 Charizard Pokémon Cards to Collect

Explore 10 Charizard Pokémon cards with artwork, exact sets and card numbers, collecting tips and UK eBay searches. Build a collection around designs you love.

Collector guide · Reviewed 21 October 2026 · By TCGInvest editorial

Charizard is easy to recognise and surprisingly easy to misidentify when buying cards. Similar artwork appears across releases, while the suffixes ex, EX, GX, V and VSTAR describe different card systems. These ten picks balance the original look, shiny designs and expansive modern illustrations so a collection can tell a story beyond a single headline card.

How we chose these cards

This is an editorial shortlist ranked for artwork, variety across card designs and usefulness in a themed collection. It is not a price, rarity, popularity-vote or expected-return ranking. We focus on established English printings from several eras, rather than promising a complete catalogue or every recent release. Edition and foil variants are not separate places unless explicitly identified. The pictured finish is a reference: confirm the finish offered by the seller.

Start with a comparison: Open Card Finder to look for the printing and inspect any available dated references. Coverage varies, so a missing card or price is not a zero valuation. See how our sources work.

1. Charizard — Base

Charizard, Base, 4/102, English card artwork

Exact printing: Charizard · Base · 4/102 · English.

Base Set Charizard is the obvious historical anchor for an English collection. The original layout and compact artwork window are the attraction. Edition, shadow treatment and condition materially change what you are comparing, so a title that simply says vintage Charizard is insufficient.

2. Charizard ex — 151

Charizard ex, 151, 199/165, English card artwork

Exact printing: Charizard ex · 151 · 199/165 · English.

The 151 special illustration uses a broad landscape and a flying pose rather than a close-up attack. It suits collectors building the Charmander evolution sequence. Number 199 is essential, because the set also contains standard and full-art Charizard ex cards with different designs.

3. Charizard V — Brilliant Stars

Charizard V, Brilliant Stars, 154/172, English card artwork

Exact printing: Charizard V · Brilliant Stars · 154/172 · English.

The Brilliant Stars illustration frames Charizard in a confrontation with Venusaur. It brings a narrative connection to a binder containing both Kanto starters. Match the illustration and number 154: the regular, full-art and rainbow Charizard cards in this set are separate targets.

4. Shining Charizard — Neo Destiny

Shining Charizard, Neo Destiny, 107/105, English card artwork

Exact printing: Shining Charizard · Neo Destiny · 107/105 · English.

Shining Charizard offers a different colour treatment within the Neo-era design. It is appealing if the collection follows shiny Pokémon as well as Charizard itself. Check the edition and surface closely, and avoid using a modern shiny card as a price comparison for this printing.

5. Charizard — Skyridge

Charizard, Skyridge, 146/144, English card artwork

Exact printing: Charizard · Skyridge · 146/144 · English.

The Skyridge Crystal-era card is a distinctive e-Reader addition, with a layout far removed from Base Set. Choose it for design history rather than to complete a modern evolution row. Confirm number 146 and request detailed photographs of both the foil and the card edges.

6. Charizard ★ δ — Dragon Frontiers

Charizard ★ δ, Dragon Frontiers, 100/101, English card artwork

Exact printing: Charizard ★ δ · Dragon Frontiers · 100/101 · English.

Dragon Frontiers' star-marked Charizard combines an alternate colour treatment with the Delta Species era. It occupies a very different collecting niche from modern Charizard ex cards. Match the star symbol and exact number, and scrutinise high-value listings for altered or misleading photographs.

7. Charizard ex — Paldean Fates

Charizard ex, Paldean Fates, 234/91, English card artwork

Exact printing: Charizard ex · Paldean Fates · 234/91 · English.

Paldean Fates gives shiny Charizard ex an expansive illustration and a dark overall palette. It works as a modern counterpart to older shiny Charizard cards. Search for number 234 specifically rather than assuming that every Charizard ex from the expansion has this artwork.

8. Charizard VSTAR — SWSH Black Star Promos

Charizard VSTAR, SWSH Black Star Promos, SWSH262, English card artwork

Exact printing: Charizard VSTAR · SWSH Black Star Promos · SWSH262 · English.

This promotional Charizard VSTAR shows a battle scene designed to sit alongside the other Charizard Ultra-Premium Collection promos. It is a good route for collectors who enjoy connected artwork. Confirm that a listing is for the card alone or the product you actually intend to buy.

9. Dark Charizard — Team Rocket

Dark Charizard, Team Rocket, 4/82, English card artwork

Exact printing: Dark Charizard · Team Rocket · 4/82 · English.

Dark Charizard brings Team Rocket's identity into a Kanto starter page. Its holo version is a separate numbered card from the set's non-holo Dark Charizard. Inspect the darker artwork and foil from an angle, where scratches may be less obvious in straight-on photographs.

10. Charizard — Evolutions

Charizard, Evolutions, 11/108, English card artwork

Exact printing: Charizard · Evolutions · 11/108 · English.

Evolutions revisits the classic Charizard presentation for a later generation of collectors. It can serve as a nostalgia-focused alternative without pretending to be a Base Set original. Verify the expansion symbol and finish; familiar artwork alone does not identify the printing.

Build a Charizard collection with a clear goal

A coherent starter page could pair the Base Set design, a shiny Charizard and one illustrated modern card. If you prefer evolution artwork, build the matching Charmander and Charmeleon sequence around 151 rather than trying to collect every Charizard at once.

Use the tools before you choose a listing

Identify and compare: Card Finder helps you look for exact cards and available observations. Check the date and source market before treating a reference as a UK transaction price.

Review a graded card: PSA Lookup is a useful next step when checking a PSA-labelled listing. Match the label, certificate and card photographs; a certificate number by itself does not establish the condition or authenticity of the item offered.

Consider grading carefully: Read our UK grading costs and turnaround guide before submitting a card. Check the current service terms, include postage and selling costs, and allow for uncertain grades. A raw-to-PSA-10 price difference is not expected profit.

Explore the set: Browse chase cards when you want context for other cards in an expansion. If you are comparing sealed products as well, use the Booster Box Tracker and ETB Tracker. A set reference is not the price of this single card. For a sealed purchase you already track, use the ROI Calculator to compare its recorded performance with your purchase cost; it is a sealed-product tool, not a card-grading forecast.

Keep track: Where a card is covered, open its detail page to use the available collection or watchlist controls. See price-alert options for supported products; coverage, account requirements and plan limits apply. An article link does not mean every card here has an alert.

How to compare eBay listings

Start with the exact name, set, number and English language shown above. Our links use the card name, set and collector number, with English selected through eBay’s language filter. Promotional cards use their specific promo number rather than a long set label. Search results can still include the wrong printing, bundles or altered cards. They are starting points, not a seller recommendation or an authentication service.

For vintage cards, compare the edition stamp and any relevant printing differences. For all cards, ask for clear front, back, corner and surface photographs. A scan of the ideal card does not establish the condition of the copy for sale. Holo, reverse-holo, stamped and non-holo variants may share a number.

Compare the total delivered cost, including postage and any import charges. Raw and graded copies belong in separate comparisons, as do different grading companies and grades. Asking prices are not completed-sale evidence. Read the seller’s description, feedback and return terms before committing.

Questions about collecting Charizard cards

Which Charizard card should I buy first?

Choose one artwork you would enjoy owning, then set a delivered-cost limit. The first-ranked card is an editorial display pick, not a requirement or a promise that it is affordable. A simpler set card can make a better first purchase if you prefer its artwork or condition.

Are these the most expensive Charizard cards?

No. The order reflects this guide’s collecting criteria. It does not use a live price table, auction record, print-run estimate or measured popularity score. A card outside this list can be a better fit for your theme.

Should I buy a single card or open packs?

A correctly identified single lets you choose the specific card and condition offered. Opening packs has an uncertain outcome and does not guarantee any card on this list. Compare the experience you want with the money you are prepared to spend.

Do the eBay links show the exact card?

They search for the card name, set and number, with English selected through eBay’s language filter, but eBay can return imperfect matches. Verify the listing photographs, language, finish and condition yourself. We do not claim current stock, a particular seller or a fixed price.

Sources and artwork

Card names, set identities, numbers and reference artwork were checked against the Pokémon TCG data catalogue, an independent community-maintained dataset. Images are served from copies checked against TCGdex’s English card catalogue or Pokémon’s official card artwork. You can also consult the official Pokémon card database and its search guide. Older releases and variants may need separate references. Card artwork is © Pokémon / Nintendo / Creatures / GAME FREAK; displayed to identify and discuss the cards, without implying endorsement. Rankings and collecting commentary are TCGInvest editorial choices.
