Top 10 Blastoise Pokémon Cards to Collect

Explore 10 Blastoise Pokémon cards with artwork, exact sets and card numbers, collecting tips and UK eBay searches. Build a collection around designs you love.

Collector guide · Reviewed 21 October 2026 · By TCGInvest editorial

Blastoise collections can follow Kanto nostalgia, changing game mechanics or the contrast between close-up portraits and underwater scenes. These ten picks provide a route through each idea. The list includes solo cards and a TAG TEAM pairing, with explicit numbers to separate repeated names across the ex, EX and modern illustration eras.

How we chose these cards

This is an editorial shortlist ranked for artwork, variety across card designs and usefulness in a themed collection. It is not a price, rarity, popularity-vote or expected-return ranking. We focus on established English printings from several eras, rather than promising a complete catalogue or every recent release. Edition and foil variants are not separate places unless explicitly identified. The pictured finish is a reference: confirm the finish offered by the seller.

Start with a comparison: Open Card Finder to look for the printing and inspect any available dated references. Coverage varies, so a missing card or price is not a zero valuation. See how our sources work.

1. Blastoise — Base

Blastoise, Base, 2/102, English card artwork

Exact printing: Blastoise · Base · 2/102 · English.

Base Set Blastoise is the starting point for an English species collection. The original holo layout gives a clear visual contrast to modern scenic cards. Edition, shadow treatment and foil condition should be matched before comparing listings, especially when one seller only provides a stock image.

2. Blastoise ex — 151

Blastoise ex, 151, 200/165, English card artwork

Exact printing: Blastoise ex · 151 · 200/165 · English.

The 151 special illustration places Blastoise in a spacious underwater scene. It is a strong modern centrepiece and a natural end to the Squirtle evolution sequence. Number 200 identifies this artwork; standard and full-art Blastoise ex cards in the same set are separate targets.

3. Dark Blastoise — Team Rocket

Dark Blastoise, Team Rocket, 3/82, English card artwork

Exact printing: Dark Blastoise · Team Rocket · 3/82 · English.

Dark Blastoise brings Team Rocket's theme into a Kanto starter collection. Its moodier presentation makes a useful companion to Base Set. Match number 3 for the holo rather than the non-holo number 20, and inspect the foil from more than one angle.

4. Blastoise ex — FireRed & LeafGreen

Blastoise ex, FireRed & LeafGreen, 104/112, English card artwork

Exact printing: Blastoise ex · FireRed & LeafGreen · 104/112 · English.

FireRed & LeafGreen Blastoise ex adds the silver-bordered lowercase ex era. It suits a collection organised around how the same starter was presented over time. Confirm number 104 and ask for border close-ups; central artwork alone is not enough to assess an older ex card.

5. Blastoise & Piplup-GX — Cosmic Eclipse

Blastoise & Piplup-GX, Cosmic Eclipse, 215/236, English card artwork

Exact printing: Blastoise & Piplup-GX · Cosmic Eclipse · 215/236 · English.

Blastoise & Piplup-GX gives the species a shared scene and a playful collecting crossover. It is an appealing choice if you enjoy Pokémon interaction more than solo portraits. Number 215 matters, because Cosmic Eclipse includes multiple treatments of the same TAG TEAM.

6. Blastoise — Expedition Base Set

Blastoise, Expedition Base Set, 4/165, English card artwork

Exact printing: Blastoise · Expedition Base Set · 4/165 · English.

Expedition's holo Blastoise brings the e-Reader frame and an older-era illustration into the page. It is a useful design-history pick alongside Base Set. Match number 4 carefully, since Expedition contains other Blastoise numbers and multiple finishes can complicate broad searches.

7. Blastoise — Plasma Storm

Blastoise, Plasma Storm, 137/135, English card artwork

Exact printing: Blastoise · Plasma Storm · 137/135 · English.

Plasma Storm's secret-numbered Blastoise offers an unusual finish-led entry from the Black & White era. It provides a different style from a modern full-art ex. Keep number 137 in your search and inspect the actual card rather than assuming every Plasma Storm Blastoise is interchangeable.

8. Blastoise-EX — XY

Blastoise-EX, XY, 142/146, English card artwork

Exact printing: Blastoise-EX · XY · 142/146 · English.

The XY full-art Blastoise-EX is a bold portrait-style option. It works as a visual break between compact vintage holos and scenic Scarlet & Violet artwork. Number 142 distinguishes it from the regular Blastoise-EX and Mega Blastoise in the same expansion.

9. M Blastoise-EX — Evolutions

M Blastoise-EX, Evolutions, 102/108, English card artwork

Exact printing: M Blastoise-EX · Evolutions · 102/108 · English.

Evolutions' full-art Mega Blastoise-EX brings Mega Evolution's dramatic lettering to a Kanto-themed page. It complements the original Base Set card while representing a different game era. Confirm number 102, since regular Mega Blastoise-EX also appears in the set.

10. Blastoise VMAX — SWSH Black Star Promos

Blastoise VMAX, SWSH Black Star Promos, SWSH103, English card artwork

Exact printing: Blastoise VMAX · SWSH Black Star Promos · SWSH103 · English.

The promotional Blastoise VMAX offers an oversized modern interpretation with a clear promo identity. It pairs neatly with the corresponding Venusaur VMAX promo in a starter collection. Check whether the seller offers the single card, a jumbo card or the complete collection product.

Build a Blastoise collection with a clear goal

If you enjoy evolution storytelling, build around the 151 Squirtle-to-Blastoise sequence. For a starter-trio collection, coordinate the era and style with Charizard and Venusaur instead of mixing unrelated finishes simply because each card names a starter.

Use the tools before you choose a listing

Identify and compare: Card Finder helps you look for exact cards and available observations. Check the date and source market before treating a reference as a UK transaction price.

Review a graded card: PSA Lookup is a useful next step when checking a PSA-labelled listing. Match the label, certificate and card photographs; a certificate number by itself does not establish the condition or authenticity of the item offered.

Consider grading carefully: Read our UK grading costs and turnaround guide before submitting a card. Check the current service terms, include postage and selling costs, and allow for uncertain grades. A raw-to-PSA-10 price difference is not expected profit.

Explore the set: Browse chase cards when you want context for other cards in an expansion. If you are comparing sealed products as well, use the Booster Box Tracker and ETB Tracker. A set reference is not the price of this single card. For a sealed purchase you already track, use the ROI Calculator to compare its recorded performance with your purchase cost; it is a sealed-product tool, not a card-grading forecast.

Keep track: Where a card is covered, open its detail page to use the available collection or watchlist controls. See price-alert options for supported products; coverage, account requirements and plan limits apply. An article link does not mean every card here has an alert.

How to compare eBay listings

Start with the exact name, set, number and English language shown above. Our links use the card name, set and collector number, with English selected through eBay’s language filter. Promotional cards use their specific promo number rather than a long set label. Search results can still include the wrong printing, bundles or altered cards. They are starting points, not a seller recommendation or an authentication service.

For vintage cards, compare the edition stamp and any relevant printing differences. For all cards, ask for clear front, back, corner and surface photographs. A scan of the ideal card does not establish the condition of the copy for sale. Holo, reverse-holo, stamped and non-holo variants may share a number.

Compare the total delivered cost, including postage and any import charges. Raw and graded copies belong in separate comparisons, as do different grading companies and grades. Asking prices are not completed-sale evidence. Read the seller’s description, feedback and return terms before committing.

Questions about collecting Blastoise cards

Which Blastoise card should I buy first?

Choose one artwork you would enjoy owning, then set a delivered-cost limit. The first-ranked card is an editorial display pick, not a requirement or a promise that it is affordable. A simpler set card can make a better first purchase if you prefer its artwork or condition.

Are these the most expensive Blastoise cards?

No. The order reflects this guide’s collecting criteria. It does not use a live price table, auction record, print-run estimate or measured popularity score. A card outside this list can be a better fit for your theme.

Should I buy a single card or open packs?

A correctly identified single lets you choose the specific card and condition offered. Opening packs has an uncertain outcome and does not guarantee any card on this list. Compare the experience you want with the money you are prepared to spend.

Do the eBay links show the exact card?

They search for the card name, set and number, with English selected through eBay’s language filter, but eBay can return imperfect matches. Verify the listing photographs, language, finish and condition yourself. We do not claim current stock, a particular seller or a fixed price.

Sources and artwork

Card names, set identities, numbers and reference artwork were checked against the Pokémon TCG data catalogue, an independent community-maintained dataset. Images are served from copies checked against TCGdex’s English card catalogue or Pokémon’s official card artwork. You can also consult the official Pokémon card database and its search guide. Older releases and variants may need separate references. Card artwork is © Pokémon / Nintendo / Creatures / GAME FREAK; displayed to identify and discuss the cards, without implying endorsement. Rankings and collecting commentary are TCGInvest editorial choices.
