A large premium above the original retail price tells you what buyers are paying relative to that baseline. It does not establish that a box is undervalued or that its price will keep rising.

What does sealed premium mean?

Sealed premium = (current comparable price − that product’s original retail price) ÷ original retail price × 100.

For an illustrative product with a £50 original retail price, a £300 price is a 500% premium and six times retail: (£300 − £50) ÷ £50 × 100 = 500%. Use the product-specific original price; one retail baseline does not apply to every edition or release.

A higher premium is not automatically a better holding opportunity. It can also mean a more expensive entry point. A lower premium does not guarantee value either. Supply, demand, condition, transaction costs and the reliability of the reference all affect a comparison.

Holding sealed versus opening and grading

A PSA 10-to-RAW ratio compares two reference values. It is not a net-profit calculation. Before considering opening a box, account for the chance of receiving each grade, grading and handling charges, insured delivery, selling fees, and the sealed value you give up. No ratio threshold guarantees a profitable result.

If your goal is the promo itself, compare the cost of buying that exact card with the cost and uncertainty of opening a sealed box. Match the stamped or unstamped printing, language, finish and condition before comparing amounts.

A practical buying checklist

1. Confirm the exact Pokémon Center edition and official contents.
2. Check the market and observation date behind the reference price.
3. Compare the actual delivered listing price and condition.
4. Decide whether you want the sealed product, the promo, or a complete set.
5. Save the product and choose a price alert so you can revisit it at your own target rather than buying because of a headline ranking.
